Three Podcasts for Goths

Podcasts are my latest obsession. They're perfect for listening to on the commute if you're tired of music for a bit; they're more interesting than the radio and don't require the commitment of an audiobook. Here are some of my current favourites.

Lore
"Lore is an award-winning, critically-acclaimed podcast about true life scary stories. Our fears have roots. Lore exposes the darker side of history, exploring the creatures, people, and places of our wildest nightmares. Because sometimes the truth is more frightening than fiction."

Lore doesn't limit itself to American folklore but tells scary stories from all around the globe. Every episode focuses on specific piece of lore; a creature, a location, a news report... Aaron Mahnke, author and creator of Lore, narrates the podcast and manages to leave the listener on the edge of their seat every single time. The episodes are fairly short so perfect for on the commute.

The Black Tapes
"The Black Tapes is a serialized docudrama about one journalist's search for truth, her enigmatic subject's mysterious past, and the literal and figurative ghosts that haunt them both. How do you feel about paranormal activity or the Supernatural? Ghosts? Spirits? Demons? Do you believe?"

The Black Tapes draws you in from the very first episode. The plot thickens at a steady pace and as a listener, you just need to know how the story ends. The fact that there are several voice actors makes the narrative much more dynamic than most fiction based podcasts or even audiobooks. Highly recommended if you like ghost stories.

Welcome to Night Vale
"Welcome to Night Vale is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local weather, news, announcements from the Sheriff's Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events. Turn on your radio and hide."

If I had to pick a top five of my favourite things in the world, Welcome to Night Vale would definitely be in it. It's the first podcast I started listening to and will always remain my favourite. It makes for some amazing, spine-chilling stories about this strange desert town but at the same time, as a listener, you get invested in the lives of these odd people and their shenanigans. Cecil's deep, ominous voice supports the atmosphere perfectly.
