REVIEW: Dogma

I wrote this blog ages ago and I can't believe I haven't posted it yet, shame on me! I'm having some kind of writer's block and there's so much going on in my life these days, so this seems like a good time to post it after all.
I've recently promised to myself that I'd watch more good films, and what better place to start than Alan Rickman's IMDB page? I'm a big fan of him, I had seen Sense and Sensibility, Perfume, Sweeney Todd and all the Harry Potter films, and I think he acts brilliantly in each and every one of them. So, I decided I wanted to see more of his movies. I started with one that had popped up on my Tumblr dashboard quite often and that seemed to be pretty funny: Dogma.
The story is about an relatively ordinary woman who one day gets visited by a seraph, one of the highest angels, the Metatron (played by Alan Rickman). He explains her that she needs to stop two fallen angels from re-entering Heaven, because when they do, the world will perish. The woman is confused and angry, but ends up doing it anyway, when she meets her two 'prophets', Jay and Silent Bob, who seem to be two big idiots. Together (and with some help from an apostle and a muse) they have to stop the two fallen angels before it's too late.
I enjoyed this movie very much, it's one of the best comedies I've seen in a long time. Alan Rickman makes a very convincing voice of God and his sarcasm and dark humour are absolutely delightful. That way it's even more touching when he actually is kind to Bethany.
Jay and Silent Bob are so stupid and desperate that they're incredibly funny to watch. It's even more amusing when they (unknowingly) save the day... Or doom it to hell. Another entertaining character was the cardinal, played by comedian George Carlin, who is in fact a very passionate atheist.
It's also very amusing when everyone makes claims about God, what he looks like and who he is, as everyone pretty much seems to give their own opinion. That way it's great to see God at the end of the movie and find out for yourself who he is, as for me, it was a very nice surprise. The ending is quite touching and funny, too.
If you get the chance to watch this one, certainly do. If you're an Alan Rickman fan, you'll definitely enjoy it.
